Week 6 Baller of the Week

Baller of the Week goes to Grant Willsie for his career-high performance of 30 points for Team Hastings in their win over McNamara. Sir Sillsie was on fire, as he got out in transition and was rewarded for his hustle all game long. Despite having no subs, Grant didn't need any rest to absolutely ball out.

Honorable mention: Matt Cota, Jack Barry (28 each)

Week 6 Results

Manzi vs. Jarboe
36-43
Sam didn't show up, so Manzi was doomed from the start. Given this circumstance, this game was probably closer than it should've been. Jarboe gets to stay on top this week I guess.

McNamara vs. Hastings
59-77
Despite having just four players on their roster show up, Hastings could not be stopped. Their big three of Chris Smith, Max Phanord, and Grant Willsie were enough for them to dominate. Today was Grant's day, as the kid couldn't miss and finished with 30 points.

Southwick vs. Willson
59-32
A lot of controversy surrounding this game. YungDad has decided to forgo lacing up as a player and devote all his time as a coach. While many believe he is doing this to allow the stars to play more while he's on the sideline, the counterargument would be that if he wanted, Harry could just choose to not show up, as many other kids do on a weekly basis around the league for the same purpose (See Alex Castellano; Team KK).

Strauss vs. Townsend
57-36
Jiminy Cricket! What a game! This was a huge win for Coach Ref Strauss and his squad, as Dougie Tompkins and Jack Blount are in mid-season form. Townsend was without their best player in Kyle Plausse, so Strauss was able to pull away as the game went on. Hank highlights from this one are on the way.

Booth vs. Sellers
76-58
Team Booth gets their first win of the season! Also, the battle for the bottom spot in the rankings was won by Sellers with this one. Sellers was undermanned but still got pummeled and remain without a win on the year. The Matty Bo Show was on full display today.

Week 5 Baller of the Week

Our apologies for the late post, but Week 5's Baller of the Week award goes to none other than sophomore big man Zach Millett, who had a dominant offensive performance to help lead Team Southwick to a huge upset win vs. Hastings. Millett is proving himself to be an MVP candidate at this point in the season, as after landing on Southwick as a free agent, he has rescued his team from averageness and elevated them to championship contender status.

Honorable mentions: Andrew Watkins, Jeremy Keast, Dan DeBinder, Hank????

Week 6 Power Rankings

Huge changes in the top of the league this week!

11. Booth (-)
I'd love to move Booth up in the rankings, but sadly I cannot. Their game this week against Strauss was a close one, and when they lost it really tugged on the heartstrings of us writers here at the Blog. This seemed to slowly go downhill when Matt "Bo" Cota was subbed out. If they can compete with a Team like Strauss then we are sure that they will have some prosperity in their future.

10. Sellers (-)
Sellers remains winless. Despite playing a good game with constant back and forths, they were still handed a sizeable L in week 5. This team has the potential to be a top talent, but for some reason, they just can't seem to get it 100% together. Reports tell me that during points in the game Team Jarboe's Andrew Watkins was allowed to take multiple open three-pointers (and yes he did hit them). We can't seem to figure out what's going on with Sellers so we're hoping that they have the answer.

9. Willson/Dzwonek (-)
Another week and another loss for Team Willson. Although they did not have their prime defender Ben Rivet, they were equipped with golf lords James and Ivan and splash enthusiast Stevie D. We understand that they probably wanted to take a step back and chuckle at The Hank, but apparently he is "kinda nice" (I still don't buy it). Let's hope that Ben shows up to the next game and that Willson can claim a win against the young Team Strauss.

8. McNamara (-4)
When Kasey and Jackson don't show up to a game you can assume it's going to be a bit of a struggle to get a win. After a huge win against Team Manzi in the week prior, McNamara unwillingly accepted a loss against the slowly rising Team KK. After telling me that he was "going to go off dood", senior leader Kasey "Borsque" Griffiths was nowhere to be found Sunday morning. Perhaps he had too many taquitos on Saturday. This squad has the capability to dominate the league, but that requires the whole group to show up and play like a team.

7. Manzi (-1)
Team Manzi had a bye week but I still have to drop them down one spot. Hopefully, Coach Manzi can get the lead out and get his team back on the right track.

6. Keast/Kimetto (+2)
Team KK is on the rise. After their second straight win, they have every right to be feeling good about themselves. Team vagabond Jeremy Keast has been balling and carrying the team on his back and it is paying off. It seems that when their mosquito of a player, Casto, doesn't show up their chances to win increase tenfold. I'd like to give a little hypothesis to the readers of the Blog. IF Casto keeps not showing up, THEN Team KK will keep winning, BECAUSE Casto's only skill is talking trash with absolutely nothing to back it up.

5. Hastings (-4)
This is the lowest Hastings has been ranked all year. Part of that is due to two of their last three games being losses. We aren't taking away from any of the talents of Team Hastings it is clear that they need to figure out what they were doing right at the beginning of the season after going 3-0 and implement that back into their game. It is doubtful that they will remain this low as the season progresses.

4. Townsend (+1)
Week by week this team has been climbing the power rankings and into our nightmares. They've really been on a hot streak winning their past three games after going 0-2 to start the season. Whether it's Plausse's ability to take over a game, Nate's unmatched intensity, or Nick Perry's limitless range, these team is doing something right. As a side note, Hank does not completely stink at the game of basketball, his jump shot is the grossest in the league though. Stick to layups Hankasaur.

3. Southwick (+4)
Let me begin this by saying that I am completely unbiased in this write up of Team Southwick. Wow, a 33 point win over Team Hastings? I said sure. Everyone on this team must have been infuriated at the buzzer beater loss in last weeks game because they came to play this week. It also seems that team captain (and close personal friend of mine) Lil YungDad has slowly been playing less and coaching more. Thanks to his expert, cutthroat coaching against Hastings, they have moved up four spots in the rankings. If they play like that every game then I fully expect the knees of every other team to quiver when they see Team Southwick as their matchup.

2. Strauss (-1)
If not for barely scraping by the last team in our rankings, I'd give Strauss the number 1 spot. There isn't much to add that hasn't already been said about this team. Hopefully, they can use their next game against Team Willson to get back into their dominant style and reclaim the throne at the top.

1. Jarboe (+2)
As much as it pains me to do it, we have a new #1 in the league right now. Team Jarboe. This team has been filleting the competition, and they are now one of the only two 4-1 teams left in the league. Although their offense might not be number one, it is without a doubt that they are one of the most defensively talented teams in the league. Don't get me wrong they are a team of good-hearted kids. I'm a huge fan of Max "The Tummy" Jarboe and Colin "Colon" TeDuits, but something about that meerkat bloke just really irks us writers here at the blog. Nonetheless, great job Team Jarboe.

Week 5 Results

Townsend vs. Willson
58-41
Townsend is officially on a hot streak. They impressively move to 3-2 despite a lousy start to the season. This game was a blowout early on, as Team Willson still continues to struggle. Hank, whether you believe he is good or not, is easily the most entertaining player in the league.

McNamara vs. KK
42-53
KK lucked out this week. Not only did their team virus Casto not show for the second straight week, but McNamara's stars Kasey and Jackson decided not to show up either. Although KK had the upper hand and took care of business against a depleted squad, Curtis Lacombe and Dan De Binder stepped up and came to play, combining for 36 of McNamara's 42 points.

Strauss vs. Booth
45-41
Booth can't catch a break. This game was supposed to be a blowout, but Booth should still be encouraged by their performance. Maybe there is more parity in the league than we realize. Despite the scare, Strauss still was able to get the job done.

Sellers vs. Jarboe
41-52
This game was back and forth, with a spectacular shooting display from Andrew Watkins. The breakout sophomore star caught fire in both halves which propelled Jarboe to a W. Sellers falls to 0-4, as they are still looking for answers.

Southwick vs. Hastings
76-43
I don't know how this happened. Max Phanord and Chris Smith were not hitting on anything from outside, while Millett lit Hastings up. The discipline of the JV players on Team Southwick outmatched the pure rec ball talents of Team Hastings. A second loss for Team Hastings will surely drop them from the number 1 spot.

Week 5 Predictions

Townsend vs. Willson
50-33
It's reasonable to assume that Willson will be rusty following their extended break. And with Townsend rounding into form, this one should go to Nate's crew. However, Hank is still the most dangerous wildcard in the league, as he can either do work and help his squad, or destroy his team's
confidence and motivation to live.

McNamara vs. KK
43-45
The outcome of this game is entirely dependent on Kasey Griffiths and Alex Castellano. If Casto is (hopefully) a no-show like last week, and Kasey continues with his unselfish playstyle, this will be an easy win for KK. But who knows, there's no controlling those variables.

Strauss vs. Booth
70-35
The final score may be a little extreme, but there is nearly 0 chance that Strauss doesn't win this game. Unless Matty Bo pulls a Max Phanord this week, Strauss should be able to coast to an easy dub.

Sellers vs. Jarboe
54-68
This game will likely be a shootout. With a load of athletes on either side, expect to see a fast-paced, high-flying battle. This game has the matchup of the week, with Zac Elmasri trying his luck against Alex Sellers. Jarboe's quick ball movement, team play, and cockiness will lead them to victory.

Southwick vs. Hastings
51-64
Harrison is bad. Max is good. While Southwick does have the tools and superstar talent to do damage, Hastings is still no. 1 for a reason. If 6th man of the year candidate Grant Sillsie decides to stop being a bum and show up, this game will be a lock for Hastings.

Week 5 Power Rankings

11. Booth (-)
Booth was already ranked last, and they lost, so there is no reason for them to move this week. To everyone on Team Booth not named Matt Cota, step it up. He will flourish once he gets some help.

10. Sellers (-3)
As one of two remaining winless teams, this group has to figure it out. The potential is there, as Alex Sellers, Jamie Smith, and Jake Scharn are a legitimate big three. They started off promising this year, but every week they seem to be playing worse. There should be legitimate concern on this team to start heading in the right direction.

9. Willson/Dzwonek (-)
Willson had a bye week this week, so no reason for them to move. They still sit at 9 however, since their one win came against the worst team in the league. We'll see how they perform in Week 5 following the long break.

8. Keast/Kimetto (+2)
Turns out this team is one of the best in the league. Seriously. The only problem is that they have Alex Castellano on their roster, who has just taken over the lead in the Worst Player in the League race. He missed his first game this week, and as a result, his team played the best they have all year. Their chemistry looked better, they went on several runs, and were simply better without his presence.

7. Southwick (-2)
A tough loss for Southwick this week bumps them down a couple ticks. They had about as ugly a finish you'll ever see in a rec game, as they blew a 6 point lead with just 40 seconds remaining. No one can be blamed more for this choke job than their emotional leader YungDad, who, despite his leadership qualities, is still terrible at the game of basketball. We'll see if this squad can develop some consistency.

6. Manzi (-3)
This group almost pulled off a hard-earned dub without their head coach Will "Fat Kid" Manzi, but Kasey Griffiths came to break hearts. Losing on a banked-in three sucks, but rec ball is all about dealing with adversity. It'll be up to how this group can respond after taking a week off to recuperate.

5. Townsend (+1)
Hank made his debut, and is quoted to be "kinda nice" at ball. Townsend now sits at 2-2, and this team is gaining confidence week after week. The return of Nate Townsend will instantly put this team in the conversation of the league's best.

4. McNamara (+4)
Already in the lead for the Ugliest Kid in the League award, Kasey Griffiths immediately put himself back into the heart of the MVP race with a picturesque game winner on Sunday. McNamara looked very promising this week, and played arguably their best game of the season. It'll be up to the point-forward Kasey to lead this team to success.

3. Jarboe (+1)
Jarboe bounced back from a humbling Week 3 loss in dramatic fashion. A win will move you up deservedly in the rankings, but you can't count on meerkats to save the day on a weekly basis. I heard Chase Herberich has been disappointing, but otherwise this team is pretty good.

2. Strauss (-1)
Strauss lost their top spot this week, but they cannot be dropped any further since it was a 1 vs. 2 matchup. The youth of Team Strauss caught up to them this week, as they had no answers for Max Phanord. The long break may be another factor to blame, but this team is staying confident and hungry.

1. Hastings (+1)
Hastings is back on top. Following Max Phanord's historic performance, this team belongs back in this spot. They beat former number 1 Team Strauss, making us all question whether last week's loss was just a fluke. The tandem of Max Phanord and Chris Smith remains terrifying.

Week 4 Baller of the Week

Max Phanord easily takes home this week's Baller of the Week after putting up a whopping 42 bloompees vs. Strauss. One of the most impressive rec ball performances in history, Phanord utterly destroyed the competition as he carried an undermanned Team Hastings to victory.

Honorable mentions: Jeremy Keast (dropped 30!), Kasey Griffiths, unnamed meerkat

Week 4 Results

Jarboe vs Southwick
52-51
What. A. Finish. Down 6 with 40 seconds to go, Jarboe puts together a streak of scores and defensive stops to give themselves a chance for the win. Jarboe's ball down 2, 6 seconds on the clock, all eyes turn to the go-to guy Andrew Watkins. An unnamed player inbounds to Colin teDuits, who immediately flips it back to this unnamed player, who lets it fly from three. Ballgame. Jarboe by 1. This unnamed player had done close to nothing for his team up until that point. For those wondering who he is, he has a fake British accent and looks like a meerkat.

KK vs. Sellers
60-54
A tough blow for Sellers, as they were undermanned and fall to 0-3. The game began as a 4 vs. 4 due to a lack of commitment from the players on both sides. KK had their best performance yet, carried by Keast's 30 point outing, along with 5 of their players posting season highs.

Hastings vs. Strauss
65-54
Hastings started this game with just four players from their roster on the floor. In this circumstance, Max Phanord knew he had to rise to the occasion. The kid put up FORTY TWO POINTS in the single greatest scoring performance since the legendary rec ball days of Sir Bursa.

Manzi vs. McNamara
59-62
As if week 4 wasn't crazy enough, another game-winning shot was granted to the large following of GD rec basketball. Coach Manzi (who was not present) was more than confident in a win against the soul searching McNamara, however, things did not go as planned. In the epic showdown of Griffiths vs Boudreau, Griffiths was able to get the last laugh. The game was tied and time was dwindling down with the ball in Griffiths' hand. This recap of the last shot comes straight from the shooter himself, Kasey Griffiths, "Dood I was on the arc and sam was pressed up against me and I knew time was running out. So I just pulled up and began to stumble back into the benches, and then BANG bank shot for the dub and I was like 'Oh Sure.'"

Townsend vs. Booth
54-46
A dreadful matchup that no one wanted to see. Team Booth continues to struggle, and Will Zinkann actually wasn't terrible in his rec ball debut. Matty Bo Binks is not a happy camper right now in Boothland. Word on the streets has it that Hank had around 4 blocks and even blocked Bo, but the writers at the blog don't buy it for a second.

Week 4 Power Rankings

11. Booth/Dorr (-3)
After the third week of play, Booth has yet to prove themselves. The former number 11 Willson made slight work of this team dropping them down to the last place in the power rankings. Team Booth will have to figure themselves very soon if they want to claw their way out of the trenches of the power rankings.

10. Keast/Kimetto (-1)
This team has a lot to be worried about. They lost to a middle-of-the-pack team despite Jeremy Keast having his first 20+ point game of the season. One thing has become clear of this team: Keast needs HELP. Right now he’s being asked to do it all, both on the floor and on the sideline. In order to have a chance of winning, Keast needs to be putting up 25-30+ a game, and that’s just too much to ask for on a weekly basis.

9. Willson/Dzwonek (+2)
Win number one for Willson! In the first half of this game, this team looked hot. Lamarre was hitting, Willson was distributing, and sleeper Ivan "Alvin" Sturm was showing us all some flashy moves. The team clearly benefited by the play of lockdown defender, Ben Rivet, as he was able to contain one of the leagues shiftiest players, Bo Cota. Although they have a bye this week, Willson should be feeling good about themselves.

8. McNamara (-3)
McNamara had a bye this past week, but they will be facing off against Team Manzi in this upcoming week. This is a vital game for McNamara, and a lot of blood will be flying as Boudreau and Griffiths face off. In order for McNamara to win this game they will have to be playing as a team and hope that the Graham, Griffiths, DeBinder connection is there.

7. Sellers (-1)
Team Sellers is off to a disappointing start. Now 0-2, they need to start rallying before the losing becomes a weekly occurrence. There’s too much talent on this team for them to not be successful. Some folks are putting the blame on Alex Sellers’ loud and aggressive coaching style. Regardless, they’ll have a chance to regroup over the break before taking on a struggling Team KK in Week 4.

6. Townsend (+4)
Team Townsend surprised the whole league by taking down the former number 1 Team Hastings. It is clear that Kyle Plausse is the real deal as he rained on Hastings all game. If Townsend carries this energy into the weeks to follow then expect them to be a top 3 team for the rest of the year. With a game against Booth this week, I expect a win streak for Townsend to begin.

5. Southwick (+2)
Team Southwick gained a big confidence boost with their win over KK. Millet showed he could fit right into the play style of this team and had a great season debut. Jack Barry showed his distributing skills throughout the game and was able to click with Millet right away. A new big three could be emerging in the league with point god Barry, big man Millet, and three-point special YungDad. Expect more great things from this team.

4. Jarboe (-2)
Ouch. Jarboe was handed a solid defeat against Team Strauss bumping them down to places in the power rankings. Although their past game was a good one, one can't help but wonder if the win could've been Jarboe's if not for DPOY candidate Colin TeDuit's ugly showing at the charity stripe. Let's hope he has been in the gym at the line these past two weeks to prepare for this week's matchup against Team Southwick.

3. Manzi (+1)
Manzi has been hot throughout this whole season. They have lingered around the top 5 spots in the rankings all year and this is definitely due to the one-two punch of Boudreau and TeDuits. As if it's not hard enough to guard Sam alone, Bradley has been lighting it up thus far. He came up to me this week to tell me he in fact only misses when he wants to. This team will only get stronger as the season goes on.

2. Hastings (-1)
Although Hastings moved out of the number one spot this week, they are still without a doubt one of the best teams in the league. Perhaps they underestimated the skill of Kyle Plausse and went into their game with too much confidence. I'd say I doubt that they will lose two games in a row but they have a very tough game versus Strauss coming up.

1. Strauss (+2)
A new number one has emerged. Team Strauss has shown that their young cast is not to be trifled with. Dougie Tompkins and Jack Blount have done a great job leading this team so far in the season. Taking down one of the best defensive teams in the league is no small feat.
