Game Picks: Week 1

Here are my game picks for week one, feel free to tear me apart in the comment section. The number in parentheses is their team number on the schedule.

Bailey (1) vs. Calderan (2)

This is the game of the week, with two heavyweights going at it. With the cross country meet moved to Monday, Lavallee should be there for Calderan. The 8:00am start time might be a little too early for Sean Bailey. I think Calderan dominates the boards, leading to second chance points, and in the end Lavallee sinks some free throws to get Calderan the W.
Calderan 55 Bailey 51

Smith (3) vs. Dawson (4)

This should be a fast paced as neither team is overwhelmingly tall. I think the difference will be determined from who plays better together as a team. Seeing as the core of the Dawson team was together last year (6 players), I think Dawson gets the job done.
Dawson 46 Smith 39

Hegeman (5) vs. Lavallee (6)

Both teams are evenly matched in terms of height and age. The ballhandling for Hegeman is lacking, besides Cotoni, and Lavallee's defense, especially the press, shouldbe lethal. I think they'll force lots of turnovers, and look to Big Ben Icenogle to carry inside.
Lavallee 45 Hegeman 32

Debreceni (7) vs. Burke (8)

The Debrecini trio of Langell and the Hills could be better than I anticipated, but Burke's team is huge. The key will be whether or not Burke can break the press, as they are very light in terms of ballhandlers. That being said, I believe in Dave Burke will draw up a good pressbreak, and because the rebound and second chance difference will be the difference in a closer game than people expect.
Burke 49 Debreceni 45

MacLeod (9) vs. Stevens (10)

Stevens is the bigger team, yet they should also be able to push the tempo. Not having Pappafagos will hurt MacLeod inside, and although MacLeod will likely be the leading scorer, Stevens is more balanced in all aspects. Only having three kids at practice could cause a slow start, but in the end Stevens should pull it together, and pull away late.
Stevens 44 MacLeod 36

Wright (11) vs. Jarboe (12)

The fact that Jon Wolfe and AJ Wright will be at the game because the XC meet got moved to Monday should be the difference. If Wright and Wolfe can neutralize Dhionis or get him into foul trouble, then Wright could pull away early. I think it's a close game at halftime, but Wright's deep bench will prevent long scoring droughts, and they take a fairly close one.
Wright 57 Jarboe 50

Dion (13) vs. Fotino (14)

I've heard conflicting reports about whether or not Shane O'Malley will be there or not. Latest I've heard is that he'll be there, so that's what I'll assume. I still think McEvoy and Hurst can make a difference inside throughout, but they'll have to handle most of the work, so they could get tired (especially as it's the first game of the season and not everyone is in basketall shape yet). In the end, Fotino comes on strong late, forces overtime, and wins a tight one.
Fotino 52 Dion 51

Woah, woah, woah! You underestimate the boarding skills of Calderan. The score should be around 60-20

i think you under estimate bailey. sean and wilks have brought a new attitude, and i think you will get a taste come saturday. bailey 60 calderan 50

calderan will beat bailey i think sean might not be there and paul will run over geoff mueller dawson will kill smith i just think that there a better team. hegeman i think will beat lavallee. cotoni and girado will be a good tandem. debreceni will beat burke. langell will run this team over. he could score 30 in his first game. stevens will beat macleod becuz of jeremy not being in the inside. i dont understand but wright really is not the best team in this league. i think they win but it will be really close. fotino wont be at this game so i think macevoy puts up mean numbers against fotino. shane is not a scorer hes a playmaker. he needs mike fotino there for that team to be successful. these r my picks for the week

to the person above this comment: why dont you say who you are if those are your picks so everyone knows...

PJ Stevens said...

and so if youre right then you can have some bragging rights

who do u guys think will be the sleeper team of the year?

PJ Stevens said...

i think jarboe or fotino could be sleepers... maybe even dion

lavalle will beat hegeman. They have much better ball handlers and are the faster team. Big Ben Icenogle will grab just about every rebound. The three guard trio of George Lavalle, Tommy Beal and Alex Killa however you spell it will cause all sorts of problems for the defense, whether they are making shots or driving the ball and getting fouls.

dawson's overrated.

macleod played an excellent game today i was very surprised by the way there team just came out and blew stevens doors off. how did smith beat dawson thats weird dont understand that. tommorow should be a tight one between burke and debreceni

Anonymous said...

macleods very underrated

PJ Stevens said...

yes macleod played really well. we were practically dead in the first half but thats no excuse. we played much better in the second half, but obviously not well enough to erase a 25 point defecit. congrats to macleod.
MACLEOD 53 STEVENS 34

wierd how jarboe beat the number one power ranked team in the league.... hmmmmmmmm

Charles and I wont be at the tommorows game so the only way debracinis winning is if langell drops 40

JD said...

yo fotino all the way, we will see baily or cauldren in the playoffs fact

Wright is good but they got a shakey bench, and of course everyone has to have the same amount of minutes it could be interesting

Anonymous said...

if you think fotino is short take a look at smiths team obviously shortest i nthe league at least both fos and e jones have descent hight...

Ryan said...

GAME JUST IN: DEBRECENI-53 VS. BURKE- 50. DEBRECENI WINS IN A CLOSE GAME BY THREE.

JD said...

yo e jones on fotino can drain, once he starts passing more we will be unstoppable, and once me, shane, and k fitz get on our shooting game back

team hegeman is being ridiculously underrated

team lavalle lost by 4. It was a close game except for that george lavalle threw up with 5 minutes left in the game. Ben icenogle kept getting blocked by cotoni, tommy beal wouldnt stop dribbling on the perimeter, and Kieleczawa missed a couple shots. However, they did play very good defense for almost all the game and did force a lot of turnovers. However, they only took one fast break opportunity, which may have contributed to them losing.

I think Hegeman should be the last ranked team even though they won. Cotoni might just be the most over rated worst 1st round pick in GD rec history.

Team Fotino looked real good. For a shorter team in the league they got a lot of rebounds and they held Dion to 6 points in the first half. Six points in the first half. Keep in mind we were missing one of our best in Mike Fotino.

Also PJ none of your picks were relatively close.

Tynan said...

out of the picked top 6 teams, 5 lost

Everyone remember its only week one, so a lot of teams could be rusty, i think in the next two games we will see who the real power teams are

PJ Stevens said...

shane you would be correct that i only picked 2 out of 7 games correctly but.... i almost got the calderan score perfectly. i said 55-51 and it ended up being 55-53 so i'll give myself a little credit. but i plan on doing better next week which shouldnt be too difficult considering i probably could have picked better if i just did it randomly hahaha
