1.) Calderan (--) Record: 2-0
Won in overtime without there best player. Lavallee stepped it up, he has shown himself to be a formidable first option without Paul Calderan.
2.) Debreceni (+3) Record: 2-0
Took care of business versus Dawson as expected. Big game next Sunday against #3 Jarboe that could solidify their hold on the #2 spot for a while.
3.) Jarboe (+3) Record: 2-0
Beat up on a Sean Baily-less team by really stepping it up on defense holding their opponent to just 27 points. Game next week versus Debreceni will be a huge to see how they measure up.
4.) Burke (+3) Record: 1-1
Got back to what I expected from them the first week: solid defense. Made Team Wright look like Team Wrong (hahaha funny), holding them to just 25 points with their lock down "D."
5.) Smith (+6) Record: 2-0
They have really surprised me so far to be honest. Honkonen has been solid throughout. A big match-up with Burke will show if they're for real or not.
6.) Fotino (-3) Record: 1-1
Really didn't look very good against a Smith team that I'm not completely sold on yet. The refs have good and bad days, but either way you need to pull out a "W."
7.) Stevens (+3) Record: 1-1
Ended the game on a 25-3 run after trailing 37-24 with 1o minutes to play. Really played well as a team to get the job done. Unselfish offense and tight defense down the stretch was huge.
8.) Bailey (-6) Record: 0-2
They didn't have Sean Bailey last weekend, but that being said they looked lost without him. They can't have success if they rely on just one player to carry the scoring load.
9.) Wright (-5) Record: 0-2
I'm still confused about this team. They have some of the best raw talent in the league, so I guess it comes down to playing as a team... which hasn't happened.
10.) Hegeman (-1) Record: 1-1
Lost to Team Calderan without Paul Calderan. If Cotoni isn't going to put up more than 8 points, then they're going to run into trouble.
11.) Lavallee (+1) Record: 1-1
Looked good against a MacLeod team that came out on fire in their week one game. They were able to dictate the tempo and slow Team MacLeod's fast-break offense down.
12.) Dion (+2) Record: 0-2
Played a very strong first 22 minutes, but they were outscored by Team Stevens 25-3 in the final 10 minutes. The addition of Noah Burkholz should really help them out in the future.
13.) MacLeod (-4) Record: 1-1
They beat Stevens in week one by 19 points, but many of those points came off of air-balls and rebounds- including 18 by Kyle Ames. When that crazy stuff didn't happen, the result was a solid loss to Lavallee. They could get better if Tynan MacLeod can step up as a go-to scorer.
14.) Dawson (-1) Record: 0-2
For a team that prides itself on defense, allowing a league season high 55 points is not going to get the job done. Still need to find a go-to scorer.

Team Stevens Block Party
This is a great video of Ryan Henry and Devin Goudey making two huge blocks in Saturday night's game versus Dion. It's Ryan Henry's video so give him all the credit.

Baller of the Week: Week 1
Normally I would post this earlier in the week, but I was waiting for some stats to come in (I should have them all by tomorrow). Anyway, I have decided to give the first Baller of the Week Award to Eric Jones. Last week against Dion he scored 16 points to help lead Team Fotino to a big 42-21 win. It was no doubt a career high in points, and I'm sure this award will strike fear into the hearts of all defenders who have to cover "E-Jones" in the coming weeks and throughout the season. Congratulations Eric on the outstanding achievement!
Game Picks: Week 2
Hopefully this week's selections will be an improvement on last week's, but we're still in the early stages so I think everyone is still getting comfortable with their respective teams... so anything can happen. ***Note that all of the Saturday games are at night, with the first two games starting at 5:00pm***
Burke (0-1) vs. Wright (0-1)
Both teams lost close games last week so I expect both will come out fighting from the get-go in an effort to even up their record. Obviously my power rankings have Wright as the better team, but I think Burke pulls an "upset" behind a big game from Mark Robinson. Close one throughout.
Burke 48 Wright 46
Stevens (0-1) vs. Dion(0-1)
Rumors are swirling that Noah Burkholz will be joining Dion's team for the rest of the season which should add a big scoring threat and certainly improve their team overall. That being said, Burkholz hasn't been able to play with his teammates to reach a comfort level yet. Stevens will come out strong in an effort to avenge last week's sluggish first-half, and hold on in the end.
Stevens 41 Dion 36
Bailey (1-0) vs. Jarboe (1-0)
Sean Bailey rocked the house last Saturday with 5 second-half three pointers in a comeback that fell just short. Unfortunately for his team, he will not be in the building Saturday night to light up the scoreboard again. Because of that I don't see Team Bailey having enough offensive firepower to overcome the loss of the league's high-scorer in week one. Yes, Wilkinson will have a mismatch in his favor, but Dhionis and crew will dominate the boards for Jarboe and they should pull out a close victory to improve to 2-0.
Jarboe 47 Bailey 46
Smith (1-0) vs. Fotino (1-0)
Both teams come into the game off victories against weak teams last week (Smith beat #13 Dawson by 7, and Fotino beat #14 Dion by 21) but I still see a large gap in between each team. Last week Honkonen was a one man show, and for Smith's team to have any chance Doug Smith will have to step it up from just 4 points last week as Shane O'Malley should cool Honkonen down a bit. In the end I think Fotino wins rather easily unless the Smith team can find a consistent second option to score.
Fotino 50 Smith 39
Calderan (1-0) vs. Hegeman (1-0)
I feel a big upset brewing in this one. With Paul Calderan out with an injured ankle, Anthony Cotoni should have a big day for Hegeman. I also see Mark Lavallee putting up a big number for Calderan as the number one option now with Paul out. But Hegeman surprised me last week and I think they can do it again this week and pull off a shocker.
Hegeman 44 Calderan 41
Dawson (0-1) vs. Debreceni (1-0)
With the Hills in the house this week, I think Debreceni gets the job done against a Dawson team that has yet to find a scorer (no one put up double digits last week for them against Smith). Dawson really has no one big enough and quick enough to cover Langell which spells big time trouble.
Debreceni 47 Dawson 38
Lavallee (0-1) vs. MacLeod (1-0)
MacLeod came out very strong last week and their uptempo pace should dictate the speed of the game. The half-court offense did not work well for Team Lavallee last week, and they could be in for a surprise if they expect to have success with it on Sunday against a MacLeod team that likes to run and gun.
MacLeod 45 Lavallee 40
Burke (0-1) vs. Wright (0-1)

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING STATS
IF YOU DID THE BOOK FOR LAST WEEKEND'S GAMES PLEASE SCAN THE PAGES FROM THE BOOK AND EMAIL THEM TO ME AT PJ.REDSOXFAN@YAHOO.COM OR JUST WRITE THEM OUT IN THE EMAIL IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO SCAN. I CAN PUT THEM ON EXCEL (UNLESS YOU WANT TO). I ALREADY HAVE STATS FROM THE SMITH/DAWSON & LAVALLEE/HEGEMAN GAMES IN EXCEL (THANKS TYNAN), SO I'M WAITING FOR THE OTHERS BEFORE POSTING ALL OF THE STATS AT ONCE. THANK YOU.
Power Rankings: Week 1
Time to look back on week 1 and establish the power rankings. Obviously the outcome of a few games has caused me to rethink a few things, so I've had to do a lot of juggling in terms of the rankings. And, no, I didn't just put all of the teams that won in the 1-7 slots, and those who lost in the 8-14 spots, because winning one game doesn't necessarily make you a top 7 team. The number in parentheses is the change from last weeks rank.
1.) Calderan (+1) Record: 1-0
They hung on against a very good Bailey team. But now Paul is hurt so they could be in trouble...
2.) Bailey (+1) Record: 0-1
Lost to the top ranked team, but Bailey was unconscious from 3pt-land in their comeback attempt.
3.) Fotino (+4) Record: 1-0
Beat up on a weak Dion team, held them to just 21 points which could be a season low for any team. Eric Jones was lethal with 16 points.
4.) Wright (-3) Record: 0-1
I still think they have the best starting five in the league, don't quit on them yet.
5.) Debreceni (+9) Record: 1-0
They beat a good Burke team without the Hills. And yes, I'll admit, I'm quite surprised. But they could be significantly better with the Hills, so watch out.
6.) Jarboe (+3) Record: 1-0
They don't have many weaknesses, and they beat a very good team in Wright. If they can beat Bailey, say hello to the top 3... but we'll see what happens.
7.) Burke (-4) Record: 0-1
Obviously I'm surprised they lost to a team previously ranked last, but it was a close game. A few more rebounds or points or steals vs. Debreceni and they would be 1-0 and in the top 3.
8.) MacLeod (+4) Record: 1-0
Came out on fire and out-rebounded Stevens. Cooled off quite a bit in the second half though. If Ames can continue to post double digits points they could be moving up in the ranks next week.
9.) Hegeman (+4) Record: 1-0
Cotoni led the charge as expected and Saiid Arshad helped out. I'm still a little iffy as to whether or not they can get consistent contributions from everyone else.
10.) Stevens (-4) Record: 0-1
Yes the first half was ugly. But a 12-0 run to start the second half and more consistent play is a sign of hope.
11.) Smith (+1) Record: 1-0
They won, but Dawson isn't a great team. If they can beat Fotino I'd move them up considerably, but I just don't see it. It can't be a one man show again like last week.
12.) Lavallee (-8) Record: 0-1
Icenogle was their only offensive weapon with 14 points. Ben Hoffman had 7, and then no one else scored more than 2.
13.) Dawson (-3) Record: 0-1
No one stood out in the offensive category, and they lost to a Smith team which I think was very beatable.
14.) Dion (-6) Record: 0-1
21 points? Yikes. I know McEvoy is a Lions fan... but does his team really need to play like them? (Relax Dustin, I'm kidding).

Game Picks: Week 1
Here are my game picks for week one, feel free to tear me apart in the comment section. The number in parentheses is their team number on the schedule.
Bailey (1) vs. Calderan (2)
This is the game of the week, with two heavyweights going at it. With the cross country meet moved to Monday, Lavallee should be there for Calderan. The 8:00am start time might be a little too early for Sean Bailey. I think Calderan dominates the boards, leading to second chance points, and in the end Lavallee sinks some free throws to get Calderan the W.
Calderan 55 Bailey 51
Smith (3) vs. Dawson (4)
This should be a fast paced as neither team is overwhelmingly tall. I think the difference will be determined from who plays better together as a team. Seeing as the core of the Dawson team was together last year (6 players), I think Dawson gets the job done.
Dawson 46 Smith 39
Hegeman (5) vs. Lavallee (6)
Both teams are evenly matched in terms of height and age. The ballhandling for Hegeman is lacking, besides Cotoni, and Lavallee's defense, especially the press, shouldbe lethal. I think they'll force lots of turnovers, and look to Big Ben Icenogle to carry inside.
Lavallee 45 Hegeman 32
Debreceni (7) vs. Burke (8)
The Debrecini trio of Langell and the Hills could be better than I anticipated, but Burke's team is huge. The key will be whether or not Burke can break the press, as they are very light in terms of ballhandlers. That being said, I believe in Dave Burke will draw up a good pressbreak, and because the rebound and second chance difference will be the difference in a closer game than people expect.
Burke 49 Debreceni 45
MacLeod (9) vs. Stevens (10)
Stevens is the bigger team, yet they should also be able to push the tempo. Not having Pappafagos will hurt MacLeod inside, and although MacLeod will likely be the leading scorer, Stevens is more balanced in all aspects. Only having three kids at practice could cause a slow start, but in the end Stevens should pull it together, and pull away late.
Stevens 44 MacLeod 36
Wright (11) vs. Jarboe (12)
The fact that Jon Wolfe and AJ Wright will be at the game because the XC meet got moved to Monday should be the difference. If Wright and Wolfe can neutralize Dhionis or get him into foul trouble, then Wright could pull away early. I think it's a close game at halftime, but Wright's deep bench will prevent long scoring droughts, and they take a fairly close one.
Wright 57 Jarboe 50
Dion (13) vs. Fotino (14)
I've heard conflicting reports about whether or not Shane O'Malley will be there or not. Latest I've heard is that he'll be there, so that's what I'll assume. I still think McEvoy and Hurst can make a difference inside throughout, but they'll have to handle most of the work, so they could get tired (especially as it's the first game of the season and not everyone is in basketall shape yet). In the end, Fotino comes on strong late, forces overtime, and wins a tight one.
Fotino 52 Dion 51

Bennani Dunk Video Released
This video of Adam Bennani has been circulating the internet. It's a short clip of his dunking skills and it should jump right to the good part. It only lasts about 25 seconds, so feel free to watch the rest but there's only a bit of Bennani footage lasting from about 5:32 to 5:55. If he can display these skills in Rec BBall (if he doesn't make varsity), then he may put Calderan's team over the top. (Thank you to Pat Thomas, Jim DiCesare, Jason Perrault, Justin Tometitch, and Adam Bennani himself for allowing me to use this. This was their project that they did in English that we watched it in class today, when I saw it I knew it was perfect for the site. Thanks guys.) CHECK IT OUT:

Preseason Power Rankings
1.) Wright
Positives: Devarenne, Wolfe, and Wright form the best trifecta in the league. They also have a very deep bench and are experienced (no freshmen).
Negatives: A little guard-heavy means they could be outrebounded unless Wright and Wolfe become more agressive on the boards.
2.) Calderan
Postitives: Calderan and Lavallee work well together. Although they're not overly tall, they are a very aggressive team and can rebound.
Negatives: Lack of a true point guard could hurt. The bench isn't up to par with other teams.
3.) Bailey
Positives: Their starting five will be one of the best in the league. The core players know eachother well and can work well together.
Negatives: A lot of personalities could interrupt focus. The Wilkinson/Bailey tandem didn't work out well last year.
4.) Lavallee
Positives: Experienced team who will give a good effort throughout. There is not one go to player, but most should be able to hold their own and work well together.
Negatives: Lack of jump shooters could allow defenses to pack it in and give them the three point shot.
5.) Burke
Positives: Without a doubt the biggest team in the league, they have the potential to lead the league in rebounds and blocked shots. Very well coached and have lots of depth.
Negatives: They have a shortage of guards which may result in problem breaking the press or just getting the ball up the court, especially if Zawada isn't healthy.
6.) Stevens
Positives: Some of the best guards in the league. They have high upside but will need to prove themselves first. Should do well running the fast break.
Negatives: As a younger team with four freshman, the newcomers will need to adapt to a faster style of play which may take a few games. Slightly undersized.
7.) Fotino
Positives: Very balanced in terms of ability on paper. On par with Calderan in terms of aggressiveness. Have potential to be one of the top teams, but need to prove themselves first as their are some variables.
Negatives: Being one of the smallest teams in the league they might have trouble stopping the Dhionis's, McEvoy's and Icenogle's of the world. Will need someone to step it up and be the second option behind O'Malley
8.) Dion
Positives: The trio of Finnell, Hurst and McEvoy could be solid. Having only eight players means more playing time for their best players in comparison to other teams best players who have to split time between nine people.
Negatives: If McEvoy makes varsity they are in serious trouble. If they are missing a few people at a game the short bench could come back to haunt them.

Analysis of the BIG Man Poll & Rankings
A week ago the BIG Man poll was put up and the results are in as to who is the number one BIG guy. Dustin McEvoy won 25 out of 69 votes, for a total of 36% of the vote. He was followed by Zack Dhionis (16/69, 23%), and Jon Wolfe (13/69, 18%). "Other" came in 4th place with 11% of the vote, and I'm assuming that this corresponds to me making an oversight and forgetting to include Ben Icenogle (sorry Ben!). Saiid Arshad was fifth (5/69, 7%) and Mark Robinson placed sixth (2/69, 2%). These results seem to confirm the rankings that I posted (which I did not vote in) in terms of the upper echelon of BIG men. Obviously forgetting Big Ben Icenogle affected the rankings I posted, so they aren't as accurate after the top 3. Overall, I personally would rank them as the poll did, with Robinson at five over Arshad.
Open Gym and Draft
There will be an open gym for all rec basketball players at Lawrence Academy tomorrow (Saturday) from 8-9:30am. It should be a fun time and there should be quite a few people there so come ready to play! The draft time has been set for right after the open gym, it will be at 10am at the Twomey Center. Once the teams are announced I will do preseason power rankings, which will be updated weekly throughout the season. Practices start next week. Games next Saturday. GET READY FOR THE BEST REC BBALL SEASON EVER.

Guard & Forward Rankings
Finally! I have the guard and forward rankings, which I calculated by averaging out the votes from 13 different people for guards, and 15 different people for forwards (both including myself this time). Overall the rankings were pretty widespread in that there was no definite number one choice. It's also interesting to note that the highest ranked guard had less #1 votes than the 2nd place guard, but Wilkinson's higher ranking is due to a lower average vote. Anyway, here they are: (The decimal is the average ranking, and in parentheses is the number of #1 votes.)
