Upcoming Schedule and First Games

Thanks to a couple of sources and some common sense, this looks like the rough schedule for the next two weeks:

Monday (11/2): Evaluations @ MSN (A-E 5:40 to 7:00, F-L 6:40-8:00, M-Z 7:40-9:00)
Wednesday or Thursday (11/4-11/5): Coaches meeting with player draft.
Friday, Saturday or Sunday (11/6-11/8): Coaches contact players on their team.
Monday-Friday (11/9-11/13): First week of practices.
Saturday (11/14): First games.

That means the first games are exactly 2 weeks away! I may or may not be able to get the forward and/or guard rankings up as I'm pretty busy this weekend, but I hope to get at least one of them done by Sunday night so check back here occasionally.

Interview with Dustin McEvoy

Today Cam Finnell and I were privileged enough to speak with Dustin McEvoy about being ranked the number one BIG Guy in our preseason rankings.

Q: How do you feel about being rated as GDRecBBall's #1 BIG Man?
DM: It's an honor, and I will do everything in my power to live up to the hype.

Q: Is there anything you would like to say to those who don't think that you deserve to be ranked #1?
DM: I'll let my play do the talking.

Q: How do you feel about your biggest competitor, in terms of BIG Man rankings, Zack Dhionis?
DM: He's a talented player and a valuable edition to any rec bball team.

Q: Do you feel that someone was overlooked in the rankings of BIG Guys?
DM: I think AJ Wright is underrated. He's one of the best BIG Guys in the league. He plays great defense and has dynamic post moves.

Q: What is your most valuable skill as a player, and what do you think you need to work on to improve your game?
DM: My most valuable skill is lock-down defense, because defense is the most important part of the game. I need to improve my post moves, as I've been blessed with height and I need to learn to take advantage of it more.

Q: Have you made a decision between rec and school basketball?

DM: I have not yet made a decision, but I plan on making one within the next two weeks.

Q: Do you have a favorite rec basketball moment from the past?
DM: I'd have to go with winning the championship in 8th grade.

Q: Finally, what are your expectations for the upcoming season?
DM: I expect to win. If you don't play to win, then there's no reason to play.

Thank you to Dustin for the interview and good luck to him this year.

Tonight I will put up the forwards rankings, and have an announcement as to when the first week of games are tentatively scheduled for, so stay tuned for that. Don't forget to vote in the poll on the sidebar to rank your #1 BIG Man, it's a close race as of now. Voice your opinion!

Ranking the BIG Guys

In anticipation of the upcoming draft, it's time to release the rankings of the top 5 BIG guys in the league this year. I polled 10 experienced rec ballers via Facebook (thanks for the help guys), and averaged their rankings together to produce a top 5. I did not vote. So without further adieu, here they are. Number of first place votes in parenthesis. The decimal number is their average ranking.

1. Dustin McEvoy 1.9-(4)
2. Zack Dhionis 2.1-(5)
3. Jon Wolfe 2.9-(1)
4. Saiid Arshad 3.4
5. Mark Robinson 4.1

Honorable Mentions: AJ Wright, Mike Shea, Adam Bennani, Mike Allen, and Tom Murray.

Tomorrow I will be ranking the top forwards/guards, with the point guards sometime over the weekend. Feel free to put your top 5 in the comment section, you don't need a blogger ID, it will just count you as anonymous, so sign your name if you want to be identified.

We have a huge group - 12 teams this year - and I need to ask that everyone follow the guidelines below.

* This will be a fun event - a 1 hour Full Court Scrimmage for each group.

* Monday, November 2nd at Middle School North

o Last name ending A - E please arrive at 5:40 for a 6 - 7 session

o Last name ending F - L please arrive at 6:40 for a 7 - 8 session

BENNANI FOR VARSITY BASKETBALL

I would encourage all of our loyal viewers to support Adam Bennani's campaign for varsity basketball. Rumor has it he has been dunking like a phenom, and an official NBA photo seems to have confirmed the myth. Be sure to join the Facebook group to help support his quest for GD's second highest league, behind our own GD Rec BBall of course, here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=logo#/group.php?gid=187621816310&ref=ts

BEST OF LUCK TO BENNANI!

Evaluation Date & Signups

According to the official website of GDYBL, gdybl.org, the exact date for evaluations is TBA, but it should be the week of November 2nd, and they will be held at Middle School North. As for signups, registration has closed but you can join a waiting list, as the league has decided to cap the amount of players at 120, meaning there will be 12 teams of 10.
